Youthful Eagles defeated by experienced Croatia

The Super Eagles of Nigeria made a losing start to their World Cup against Croatia, as Oghenekaro Etebo’s own goal and a Luka Modric penalty decided a poor display in Group D.

Etebo who was on loan at Las Palmas last season had recently joined English Championship side Stoke City from Portuguese club Feirense for £6.35m turned a Mario Mandzukic flying header into his own net.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric then converted a 71st-minute penalty after William Troost-Ekong had rough handled Mandzukic during a corner kick.

The young Eagles offered very little attacking threat throughout the game with Victor Moses very wasteful with his crosses and not having enough command on the game.  The victory takes Croatia top of group D after Argentina and Iceland played a 1-1 draw earlier in the day.

Nigeria now has a mountain to climb after this defeat to Croatia in a difficult group. They did not create enough clear-cut chances and some poor defending cost them dearly. The Super Eagles must now beat Iceland on Friday in Volgograd to stay alive in this World Cup.
